How half-elf names work
Half-elf names are borrowed twice over. Most carry an elven name from one parent — flowing, vowel-heavy, ending in -iel, -wen or -dor — and answer to a blunter human one in the towns where elvish draws stares. The result is a name that sounds slightly foreign in both halls.
Anatomy of a half-elf name
This generator assembles names the way the tradition does. Typical openings include Aer, Bre, Cor, Dae, Elu, Fen, Gal, Ilm; names run 2–3 syllables and resolve on endings such as -iel, -an, -wen, -ar, -is, -ora. Gender lives mostly in the ending: feminine forms favour -a, -ia, -wen, -riel, -ine, masculine forms -an, -ion, -dor, -ric, -us, and neutral names simply pick from the wider pool.

Where half-elf names come from
Half-elf names are the most flexible in D&D because half-elves are raised in either culture — or neither. The official lore notes that half-elves usually take names from whichever parent's society raised them, and sometimes blend the two: an elvish name with a human surname, or a human first name with elvish cadence. The result is a register that sits between the flowing elvish style and ordinary human naming.
How to build a good one
Borrow elvish flow but keep it shorter and more grounded: two syllables, soft consonants, endings like -an, -ra, -en or -iel. Blends work well — an elvish given name with a plain human family name tells a whole story. Avoid fully elvish four-syllable names unless the character was raised entirely among elves.
At the table
Half-elf names are a quick way to show where a character belongs — or doesn't. A half-elf who uses a human name among elves, or an elvish one among humans, is choosing which side of themselves to show, and players respond to that immediately.
