How drow names work

Drow names are elven phonology twisted darker — the same liquid l/r base, but shot through with z, x, ss and doubled consonants that give them a hiss. Drow society is matriarchal, so female names carry the noble weight and often end in -ice, -iss or -ynn.

Anatomy of a drow name

This generator assembles names the way the tradition does. Typical openings include Ala, Bri, Dri, Ely, Fae, Ilv, Jhael, Mal; names run 2–3 syllables and resolve on endings such as -ice, -iss, -ryn, -dra, -zzt, -une. Gender lives mostly in the ending: feminine forms favour -ice, -iss, -ynn, -ara, -dra, masculine forms -zzt, -ryn, -ael, -yl, -ath, and neutral names simply pick from the wider pool.

Where drow names come from

Drow names are a house style in both senses: R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt Do'Urden and the Menzoberranzan novels fixed the sound — elven liquid consonants sharpened with z, x and double-s, apostrophes marking house prefixes — and the matriarchal society shaped the grammar. Female names carry the political weight (Malice, Quenthel, Triel) because power does; male names skew shorter and more disposable, which in Menzoberranzan is a plot point. The surname convention (Do'Urden, Baenre, Xorlarrin) makes house allegiance audible in every introduction.

How to build a good one

Start from elvish, then corrupt it: keep the liquid l/r base but salt it with z, x, ss and doubled letters. Female endings -iss, -ice, -ynn, -dra; male endings -zt, -ryn, -ath, -kra. One apostrophe maximum, and only where two real name-parts join — apostrophes as decoration read as parody. Darker vowels (u, y) over bright ones keep it Underdark; if it could pass at an elven court unchanged, add one hiss.

At the table

Introduce drow by house name first in formal scenes and watch players learn the politics by ear — Baenre gets deference, lesser houses get talked over. A drow NPC who drops their house name entirely is signalling exile or rebellion, which is a full character concept delivered in a single omission.
