How duergar names work

Duergar names are dwarvish stripped of warmth: the same hard stops and clan-suffixes, ground down by centuries in the Underdark. Where a shield dwarf's name honours a forge or an ancestor, a gray dwarf's honours a debt, a depth or a grudge — Khazgrim, Morzur, Thurdun.

Anatomy of a duergar name

This generator assembles names the way the tradition does. Typical openings include Bru, Dorn, Grum, Hrag, Khaz, Mor, Nul, Skor; names run 2–3 syllables and resolve on endings such as -dar, -grim, -nak, -thak, -dun, -mor. The tradition doesn't gender-code its names — any ending suits any character.

Where duergar names come from

Duergar are the grey dwarves of the Underdark — dwarves who were enslaved by mind flayers and emerged grim, psionic and resentful — and their names take the dwarven template and strip the warmth out of it. The same Norse-derived hard stops remain, but the heroic endings give way to darker, heavier sounds that suit a people who build without joy.

How to build a good one

Start from dwarven structure — two syllables, hard consonants — then darken it: Drak, Grund, Morthrak, Vurgrim. Use harsher clusters and fewer open vowels than surface dwarves. Clan names can reference the Underdark: stone, dark, iron, depth.

At the table

Pair duergar and surface dwarves in the same campaign and let players hear the difference: Thorin versus Grundmoor. The echo tells players these are cousins before the lore does — and makes a duergar betrayal feel like family. Duergar also rarely volunteer names to outsiders; an NPC who offers one freely is either unusually trusting or setting a trap, and players quickly learn to wonder which.
